Théâtre Motus: Baobab (Philadelphia Children’s Festival)

May 3 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$29

In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. Featuring traditional music from Mali and Senegal, puppets large and small, one naughty monkey and a witch with an itch to dance, Baobab is a percussion-filled fable about a young boy’s heroic quest to save his village. Making its Philadelphia debut, Théâtre Motus’ “Baobab is the next best thing to The Lion King, only smaller-scale and far better tailored (at 55 minutes) to young attention spans.” (Montreal Gazette)

Baobab is a coproduction of Théâtre Motus and the SÔ Company (Mali), created with the support of Théâtre de la Ville (Longueuil) for a residency, and in collaboration with Hamadoun Kassogué (Mali) and †Ismaïla Manga (Senegal).

Our annual Philadelphia Children’s Festival features an exciting array of professional performances for the whole family. Plus, enjoy the outdoor PLAYground with hands-on activities, performers and more. The Children’s Festival is rain or shine.

Weekend performances and school-day matinees available!
